Nanaimo Squash Club Opens Doors for Women’s Squash Week September 14-22.

 

For many squash is a vegetable. But for an estimated 10,000 British Columbians, the sport of squash is their passion, fitness routine and social hub.

 

It wasn’t until she was 50 years old did Catherine DiCecca stepped onto a squash court. The impetus she explained was that both her and husband needed to get back into shape.

“The club was highly supportive and not intimidating for newcomers. Along with the Club’s welcoming culture we got addicted” said DiCecca.

The Nanaimo Squash Club’s welcoming culture was also a big motivator for Robin Gauvin’s entry into the world of squash. Robin who was new to Nanaimo saw the sport as a great way to get fit while the club, a great way to meet people.

Some years later, like so many other squash converts, the Nanaimo nurse still plays an average of three times a week and is immersed in the sports legendary social life at the club.

“I started playing because of the workout – I stayed because of the community” she said.

Next month, on September 14 – 22 is Women’s Squash Week in BC the Nanaimo Squash Club will be joining 25 other BC clubs and facilities in hosting a Women’s Squash Week event for newcomers and players of-all-levels.

Melinda Morben joins Catherine DiCecca as this year’s Women’s Squash Week Ambassadors for the Nanaimo Squash Club. The two women embody the Club’s welcoming spirit with tremendous enthusiasm for encouraging girls and women of all ages to step onto the court next month and try the #1 healthiest sport out.

Morben says “squash can be anything you want it to be – fun, fitness, competitive and social. The sport looks good on everyone and fits any ability”.
